Cat Straining to Pee with Little or No Urine: Emergency Blockage Guide

🚨 Check first

Life-threatening emergency: If your cat has not peed for 24 hours or more, or squats repeatedly in the litter box but produces only a few drops, this is likely a urethral obstruction (urinary blockage). A blocked cat can die of uremia within 48 hours, so go to an emergency vet right away, even at night.

📌 The answer in 3 seconds

  1. Going in and out of the litter box repeatedly, straining for a long time, or crying in pain are signs that urinary stones (uroliths) or crystals are blocking the urethra.
  2. Male cats have a long, narrow urethra that blocks easily. A delay of just a few hours can lead to acute kidney failure.
  3. Because straining to pee looks very similar to constipation, check the cat litter for urine clumps first.

📊 Flowchart

  1. Step 1Scoop through the cat litter to check if there are any urine clumps (or wet spots on the pad of a two-tier litter box) from the past 12–24 hours.
  2. Step 2If there are no clumps—or only tiny clumps about 2 cm (0.8 in), the size of a small coin—do not wait and see. Call your vet or an after-hours emergency clinic right away.
  3. Step 3Because the bladder is dangerously full and tight, place your cat gently into a cat carrier without pressing on their belly and head to the vet.

⭕ Step-by-step fix

  1. Step 1 · What you can do at home right now

Scoop through the cat litter to check if there are any urine clumps (or wet spots on the pad of a two-tier litter box) from the past 12–24 hours.

  2. Step 2

If there are no clumps—or only tiny clumps about 2 cm (0.8 in), the size of a small coin—do not wait and see. Call your vet or an after-hours emergency clinic right away.

  3. Step 3

Because the bladder is dangerously full and tight, place your cat gently into a cat carrier without pressing on their belly and head to the vet.

❌ Never do this

  • Assuming it is just constipation and waiting until morning (by morning, your cat may collapse or lose consciousness).
  • Pressing or massaging your cat's belly to help them pee (this can rupture the bladder).
