Blood or Jelly-Like Mucus on Cat Poop: Causes, Urgency, Samples
๐จ Check first
If the whole stool is black and gooey like coal tar (black stool), or your cat keeps having diarrhea with large amounts of blood like strawberry jam and is limp and vomiting, it is an emergency. There is a risk of major bleeding from the stomach or small intestine or of severe enteritis, so go to a clinic immediately.
๐ The answer in 3 seconds
- If a few drops of bright red blood are on the surface or at the very end of a stool of healthy firmness, or clear to pink jelly-like mucus (intestinal lining) is clinging to it, it is a sign that the large intestine, near the exit, is irritated.
- If your cat is lively and eating normally, the cause is often a small tear near the anus from passing hard stool during constipation, temporary colitis, stress, a food change, or parasites (such as Tritrichomonas or coccidia).
- In many cases it is not an immediate life-threatening emergency, but treatment for the specific cause may be needed, so wrap the stool in plastic wrap and have a fecal test at a veterinary clinic the same day or the next day.
๐ Flowchart
- Step 1Take a smartphone photo that clearly shows the part with blood or jelly-like mucus.
- Step 2Collect a thumb-sized piece of stool that includes exactly that part with blood or mucus, wrap it in plastic food wrap without using tissue to keep it from drying out, and bring it in.
- Step 3Ease the strain on the intestines with a digestive care food containing soluble fiber that helps repair the lining of the large intestine, a lactic acid bacteria supplement, or food softened in lukewarm water.

Ease the strain on the intestines with a digestive care food containing soluble fiber that helps repair the lining of the large intestine, a lactic acid bacteria supplement, or food softened in lukewarm water.
โ Never do this
- Panicking after seeing red blood just once and scrubbing your cat's bottom hard with alcohol wet wipes or similar (it becomes raw and bleeds even more).
- On the other hand, leaving it for weeks even though there is jelly-like bloody stool every time, thinking "they're lively, so it must be hemorrhoids" (cats almost never get hemorrhoids the way people do, and chronic colitis, polyps, lymphoma, or food allergy may be hiding).
