Senior Cat Ingrown Nails: Prevention and Joint-Friendly Trimming
๐จ Check first
If a claw has already curled all the way around and is stuck deep in the paw pad, and your cat is bleeding, licking constantly at pus, or limping, do not try to pull it out at home. Have it treated at a veterinary clinic and get antibiotics prescribed to prevent infection.
๐ The answer in 3 seconds
- Cats over 10 scratch less because of joint pain, and their slower metabolism means old claw sheaths no longer shed naturally, so the claws build up in layers and become thick and curled.
- The claw most often overlooked is the dewclaw, the thumb claw on the inner side of the front leg (set a little higher up). It never touches the scratcher, so it is the claw most likely to grow into the paw pad.
- Cutting a senior cat's thick claws with old, dull clippers can make them crack and irritate the nerve, so trim the tips often with sharp, thin-bladed stainless steel scissor-type or guillotine-type clippers.
๐ Flowchart
- Step 1Twice a month (for example, on the 1st and 15th), while your cat naps, gently press the paw pads to push the claws out on all 18 (5 on each front paw and 4 on each hind paw), and check whether any claw is getting close to the pad.
- Step 2Pulling a senior cat's stiff leg hurts, so leave your cat in the natural position they are sleeping in, bring your own body closer, and snip about 2 mm (0.1 in) off the white tip.
- Step 3If the claws are thick and cloudy white and you cannot see where the quick (the pink blood vessel) starts, shine a smartphone light from behind the claw to see through it, or trim little by little, just the sharp point.
โญ Step-by-step fix
Step 1 ยท What you can do at home right now
Twice a month (for example, on the 1st and 15th), while your cat naps, gently press the paw pads to push the claws out on all 18 (5 on each front paw and 4 on each hind paw), and check whether any claw is getting close to the pad.
Step 2
Pulling a senior cat's stiff leg hurts, so leave your cat in the natural position they are sleeping in, bring your own body closer, and snip about 2 mm (0.1 in) off the white tip.
Step 3
If the claws are thick and cloudy white and you cannot see where the quick (the pink blood vessel) starts, shine a smartphone light from behind the claw to see through it, or trim little by little, just the sharp point.
โ Never do this
- Trying to force a claw stuck deep in the paw pad out with household clippers (it can cause heavy bleeding, or a broken piece of claw can stay inside the pad and become infected).
- Assuming, as when your cat was young, that "there's a scratcher, so nail trimming isn't needed," and not looking at the paws for months.
