Why Is My Cat Limping or Holding Up a Paw? From Sprains to Blood Clots

๐Ÿšจ Check first

Critical emergency red flag: If your cat suddenly lets out a piercing scream and collapses, with one or both hind legs limp and dragging, the hind paw pads ice-cold and bluish-white, and breathing fast, this is aortic thromboembolism (saddle thrombus): a blood clot formed in the heart that has lodged in the leg arteries. Every second counts, so rush to an emergency vet right away, even at night.

๐Ÿ“Œ The answer in 3 seconds

  1. If there is no scream or paralysis, and your cat is alert and eating but holds up a front or back paw while hopping, it is often a mild sprain or bruise from a bad landing, torn claws, ingrown claws, or a splinter in the paw pad.
  2. In outdoor or multi-cat households, a warm, swollen leg accompanied by lethargy and fever may point to an abscess from a bite wound.
  3. Do not pull on or manipulate your cat's leg at home, as this can worsen fractures or dislocations. Confine them to a crate or small room, limit jumping, take a video, and see a vet.

๐Ÿ“Š Flowchart

  1. Step 1Emergency check first: Gently touch the paw pad of the dragging leg. If it is cold, pale, completely limp, and causes agonizing pain when touched, suspect a blood clot and rush to an emergency vet immediately.
  2. Step 2If the paw pad is warm and your cat is alert, look at (but do not handle) the underside of the paw and between the toes. Check if a claw is torn at the base, an ingrown claw is piercing the pad, or if there is glass or a plant thorn.
  3. Step 3To prevent your cat from jumping off cat trees or furniture and worsening the injury, keep them in a single-tier crate or a small room without jumps, take a smartphone video of their walk, and head to the vet.

โญ• Step-by-step fix

  1. Step 1 ยท What you can do at home right now

Emergency check first: Gently touch the paw pad of the dragging leg. If it is cold, pale, completely limp, and causes agonizing pain when touched, suspect a blood clot and rush to an emergency vet immediately.

  2. Step 2

If the paw pad is warm and your cat is alert, look at (but do not handle) the underside of the paw and between the toes. Check if a claw is torn at the base, an ingrown claw is piercing the pad, or if there is glass or a plant thorn.

  3. Step 3

To prevent your cat from jumping off cat trees or furniture and worsening the injury, keep them in a single-tier crate or a small room without jumps, take a smartphone video of their walk, and head to the vet.

โŒ Never do this

  • Trying to find where it hurts by twisting, pulling, or tightly gripping your cat's ankle or joints (this can complete a hairline fracture or worsen ligament damage).
  • Putting human pain-relief patches containing NSAIDs (such as indomethacin or loxoprofen) on your cat's leg (absorption through the skin or licking can cause acute kidney injury or severe gastrointestinal damage).
