Cat Won't Drink Water: Bowl Placement, Dish Types & Warm Water Tips

๐Ÿšจ Check first

If your cat is not avoiding water, but instead has suddenly started gulping large amounts of water (50 mL [1.7 fl oz] or more per 1 kg [2.2 lb] of body weight per day), this is an early sign of chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes, or hyperthyroidism.

๐Ÿ“Œ The answer in 3 seconds

  1. Because cats originated as desert animals and have a dull sense of thirst, having water in only one spot in the house makes them feel it is too much trouble to walk over and drink, leaving them mildly dehydrated.
  2. Cats are very particular about water: changing the bowl material (ceramic, glass, or stainless steel), water temperature (lukewarm), and placement (away from litter boxes and food bowls) can double how much they drink.
  3. For cats that still refuse to drink plain water, the most reliable way to hydrate them through meals is switching half their daily diet to wet food, or serving hydration soups or liquid treats diluted with warm water.

๐Ÿ“Š Flowchart

  1. Step 1Set up at least 3โ€“4 water stations spread along the paths your cat naturally walks through the home (such as the living room, bedroom, and hallway).
  2. Step 2Move water bowls away from right beside the litter box or right next to the food dish (wild instinct tells cats that water near waste or prey may be contaminated).
  3. Step 3In winter, fill bowls with 35โ€“38ยฐC (95โ€“100.4ยฐF) lukewarm water instead of cold tap water, or try a circulating pet water fountain for cats that prefer running water.
  4. Step 4Pour 2 tablespoons of lukewarm water over dry kibble, or mix 1โ€“2 tablespoons of lukewarm water into a pouch of wet food to serve it as a warm soup.

โญ• Step-by-step fix

  1. Step 1 ยท What you can do at home right now

Set up at least 3โ€“4 water stations spread along the paths your cat naturally walks through the home (such as the living room, bedroom, and hallway).

  2. Step 2

Move water bowls away from right beside the litter box or right next to the food dish (wild instinct tells cats that water near waste or prey may be contaminated).

  3. Step 3

In winter, fill bowls with 35โ€“38ยฐC (95โ€“100.4ยฐF) lukewarm water instead of cold tap water, or try a circulating pet water fountain for cats that prefer running water.

  4. Step 4

Pour 2 tablespoons of lukewarm water over dry kibble, or mix 1โ€“2 tablespoons of lukewarm water into a pouch of wet food to serve it as a warm soup.

โŒ Never do this

  • Leaving the same water sitting in the bowl all day without changing it (once cat hair, dust, or saliva floats on the surface, scent-sensitive cats will refuse to drink; refresh water at least twice a day).
  • Giving tap water with a strong chlorine smell or hard mineral water high in minerals (excess minerals can contribute to urinary stones [uroliths]; always use soft water or filtered water).
