Why Is My Cat Drooling? Mouth Sores, Dental Disease, Poisoning, Nausea

๐Ÿšจ Check first

If a cat who has never drooled suddenly starts dripping large amounts of watery saliva or foam, this is an emergency sign of poisoning (from licking bitter medicine, toxic plants, detergents, or insecticides) or of severe nausea, heatstroke, or a neurological seizure. Check the room right away for anything your cat may have eaten, and see a vet.

๐Ÿ“Œ The answer in 3 seconds

  1. Unlike dogs, cats do not normally drool (clear drops falling from the nose or mouth when relaxed and purring are normal physiological exceptions).
  2. Brownish, sticky saliva with a foul, fishy odor accompanied by soiled fur around the chin points to severe periodontal disease, stomatitis, tongue ulcers, or oral tumors making swallowing painful.
  3. Since fish bones, sewing needles, or toy fragments can also cause drooling, avoid opening jaws forcibly and get an oral check at the clinic.

๐Ÿ“Š Flowchart

  1. Step 1Assess saliva condition, distinguishing between normal relaxed clear drops and abnormal continuous drooling, foul odors, bloody saliva, or foaming.
  2. Step 2For sudden heavy drooling or foaming: Check if spot-on flea treatments, houseplants, human medications, or detergents were licked recently, wipe mouths with a damp towel, and call the vet.
  3. Step 3For chronic drooling with eating difficulty: Switch dry food to smooth paste or soup-style wet food since hard kibble causes sharp pain, and seek pain relief or dental care at the clinic.

โญ• Step-by-step fix

  1. Step 1 ยท What you can do at home right now

Assess saliva condition, distinguishing between normal relaxed clear drops and abnormal continuous drooling, foul odors, bloody saliva, or foaming.

  2. Step 2

For sudden heavy drooling or foaming: Check if spot-on flea treatments, houseplants, human medications, or detergents were licked recently, wipe mouths with a damp towel, and call the vet.

  3. Step 3

For chronic drooling with eating difficulty: Switch dry food to smooth paste or soup-style wet food since hard kibble causes sharp pain, and seek pain relief or dental care at the clinic.

โŒ Never do this

  • Thrusting bare fingers deep into a struggling cat's mouth to check for foreign objects (risking severe bite injuries and pushing objects deeper).
  • Brushing or combing hardened saliva crusts off the chin and chest forcibly (soften crusts with warm washcloths first).
